Dogs are welcome in the Shawnee National Forest, located between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, in southern Illinois. The forest’s terrain spans woodlands, hills and lakes. The Garden of the Gods wilderness area features ancient sandstone cliffs and formations. Trails include the long River to River Trail and the Rim Rock National Recreation Trail, circling an escarpment. Dogs must be leashed or restrained in developed recreation areas such as campgrounds, picnic areas and on developed trails.
