Dog Friendly Beaches in the U.S.

Find dog friendly beaches, including off-leash dog beaches, and dog swim areas in the U.S.

Finding a dog beach in the U.S. is easy with our state-by-state listings of beaches that welcome dogs, on leash and off leash. Visiting a dog beach is a great way for your dog to get some exercise on the sand. Dog swim areas also offer a place to cool off in the water. However, before you go to a dog-friendly beach, please keep in mind the following:

Know the rules to bring your dog to the beach

Since most public beaches restrict dogs in the summer, it can be difficult to find a beach where dogs can swim and cool off in the water during the hottest months of the year. Most dog-friendly beaches require dogs to remain on leash, sometimes even in the water. Some beaches allow dogs only during the off-season, or only during certain times of the day. Some beaches set aside a designated portion of the beach where dogs are allowed. Finally, some beaches are dedicated dog beaches where dogs are allowed off-leash. Check the individual listing for the rules to bring your dog to the beach.

Find an off-leash dog beach

Some beaches offer dedicated areas where dogs are allowed to run off leash once in the designated dog beach area. These beaches include Bark Beach at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton, FL; Brohard Beach and Paw Park in Venice, FL and Wildwood Dog Park & Beach in Wildwood, NJ.

Keep your dog safe at the beach

The beach is a wonderful place to spend time with your dog, and most dogs love playing on the sand and in the water. However, be aware there can be hazards for your pet at the beach. Don’t let your dog drink the water at ocean beaches; salt water makes dogs sick – just like humans. Never leave your dog unattended and be aware that all sorts of items can be partially or fully hidden in the sand; broken glass, rocks, hooks, coral, and garbage can pose a danger to your dog.
