Located between the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, in southern Illinois, Shawnee National Forest Campgrounds offer a variety of camping experiences ranging from primitive backpacking to a developed campground equipped with showers and electrical sites. Most campgrounds & picnic areas are located near lakes or areas of exceptional beauty. Campgrounds include Garden of the Gods, Pounds Hollow, Camp Cadiz, Pine Hills and Johnson Creek. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis; reservations are not accepted. The developed campgrounds are usually open from April 1 through Dec. 15, although there are some exceptions. Pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed in the campgrounds. Pets are not allowed in designed swimming areas.
