The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is located in the greater Los Angeles region, with two thirds of the parklands in northwest Los Angeles County, and the remaining third, including a Simi Hills extension, in southeastern Ventura County. Dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed in the area, but are required to stay on trails, roads, and developed areas (campgrounds and parking lots). Pets are not permitted on backcountry trails in California State Parks (Topanga, Malibu Creek, Leo Carillo and Point Mugu State Parks.
