North Carolina Ferry System runs nearly two dozen boats on seven routes, connecting tourists from the mainland to scenic destinations. Service for most of the seven ferry routes is free, but fares are charged for service on the popular Cedar Island-Ocracoke and Swan Quarter-Ocracoke routes as well as the Southport-Fort Fisher route and the Ocracoke Express (Hatteras-Ocracoke) passenger ferry route. Pets are permitted on ferries, but they must be kept in vehicles or on leashes at all times, and owners must clean up after their pets. Horses must be transported on board in a horse trailer. Only service animals are allowed inside Ferry Visitor Centers or Ferry Passenger Lounges.
