Located at 8635 A1A S, St. Augustine, FL 32080, Fort Matanzas National Monument Beach protects approximately 300 acres of Florida coastal environment containing dunes, marsh, maritime forest, and associated flora and fauna, including threatened and endangered species. Operated by the National Park Service in conjunction with the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in the city of St. Augustine, the monument consists of a 1740 Spanish fort called Fort Matanzas, and about 100 acres of salt marsh and barrier islands along the Matanzas River on the northern Atlantic coast of Florida. The river and ocean beaches as well as the .6 mile nature trail offer visitors the opportunity to view a variety of plants and wildlife native to this ecosystem. Dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed in the park, including on the beach and on the trails. Pets are not allowed in the visitor center, on the boat, or at the fort.
