Located on North Carolina’s coastal Outer Banks, Ocracoke Island Beaches offer sixteen miles of secluded, natural beaches, backed by sand dunes. There are ramps along Highway 12 that provide off-road vehicle access to the drivable sections of the beach. To drive on the beach, you will need to get either a 10-day or annual permit. All of the beaches along Ocracoke Island are part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, and as such, National Park Service (NPS) rules and regulations apply to every stretch of shoreline. Dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed on the beach year-round. Dogs are prohibited on designated swimming beaches. You must take a ferry to get to Ocracoke Island. Pets are allowed in personal vehicles as they board the ferries and can get out and walk on the main deck of the ferry, but must be leashed at all times.
