Mike Thompson Wildlife Area (South Spit Humboldt Bay) is the long beach on the sandy spit south of the entrance to Humboldt Bay near Eureka.The property was designated as a wildlife area by the Fish and Game Commission in 2007. This long, narrow spit of land is 598 acres of coastal beach dunes that provides habitat for dune plant species. Ravens, foxes, and raccoons are regularly seen here, and the area is rich in shorebirds and waders. Dogs on a leash are allowed on the ocean side of South Jetty Road during the snowy plover breeding season (March – September), and off-leash and under voice control during non-breeding season. There is no public use in the snowy plover restoration area during breeding season.
