Gateway National Recreation Area NY is a 26,607-acre area in New York City and Monmouth County, NJ. It provides many recreational opportunities, including ocean swimming, bird watching, boating, hiking and camping. The recreation area comprises two units in New York: Jamaica Bay Unit in Brooklyn and Queens, includes Jacob Riis Park, Fort Tilden West Beach and Breezy Point Tip; and Staten Island Unit in Staten island, includes Great Kills Park, Dogs on a leash are allowed at the following beaches in New York:
Ocean-side beaches at Jacob Riis Park, Fort Tilden West Beach and Breezy Point Tip and at the bayside of Breezy Point Tip (all within Jamaica Bay Unit) during the off-season, from September 15th to March 15th. Pet are not permitted between March 15 and September 15 (piping plover season).
Swimming beaches at Staten Island Unit’s Great Kills Park during the off-season, from the day after Labor Day to Memorial Day. Pets are not permitted from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Dogs are not permitted at any part of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge at any time of year.
