Maryland’s only oceanfront park, Assateague State Park is located on Assateague Island, a barrier island bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the east and the Sinepuxent Bay on the west. Two miles of ocean beaches offer swimming, beachcombing, sunbathing, surfing and fishing. The bayside offers visitors the chance to explore secluded coves by canoe or kayak. The day-use area provides access to the beach and is open from 7am – sunset. A bathhouse is available with toilets, sinks, showers with warm water, and baby changing stations. Dogs on a leash are allowed in day-use areas during the off-season, from the day after Labor Day to the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Pets are also allowed in marina area and boat launch. Pets are only allowed in specific areas on the Maryland side of the park but are prohibited on the Virginia side.
