The Lufthansa Airlines pet policy is as follows:
Depending upon the kind of animal, its weight and size, and the regulations applicable in different countries, transport is possible at an extra cost either as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin or as excess baggage in the aircraft’s air-conditioned cargo hold.
Only smaller dogs and cats, who weigh no more than 8 kg including their transport container, may be transported under certain conditions as additional carry-on baggage in the passenger cabin.
Dogs and cats, who weigh more than 8 kg including their transport container, may be transported under certain conditions as excess baggage in the aircraft’s air-conditioned cargo hold.
The transport of hares and rabbits in the cargo hold is restricted.
Animals classified as fighting or dangerous dogs may only be transported in special crates and exclusively in the hold. An exception is made for fighting dogs between the ages of three and six months.
Dogs and cats belonging to snub-nosed breeds have anatomically restricted airways with the accompanying difficulty in breathing. The stress caused by transportation and/or high temperatures at the departure, transfer and destination airports can cause circulatory issues that may result in breathing problems. Lufthansa will therefore no longer be transporting these breeds in the cargo hold.
No animals are accepted in the cargo hold on connecting flights via Munich.
Lufthansa Cargo offers the transport of dogs, cats, and other species as air freight. Special rules apply to assistance dogs. Please note that because of local circumstances and restrictions, the transport of large animals in the cargo hold to certain destinations is not possible.
Taking a pet to a foreign country involves preparation and planning far in advance of your departure date. Requirements for pet travel to a foreign country are set by the destination country. If you are you traveling to another country and bringing along your pet you’ll need to meet the animal health requirements of the country you are visiting.
