Many airlines allow pets to fly in the cabin if certain conditions and guidelines are met and an additional fee is paid. Each airline decides if they will allow you to travel with your pet in the passenger cabin. If the airline does allow you to bring your pet into the cabin, your pet container is considered to be carry-on baggage and must be small enough to fit underneath the seat. Pets may fly in the cabin as a carry-on, so long as they stay inside a carrier for the duration of the flight. Most airlines that allow pets in the cabin only allow small dogs and cats. Some airlines also allow birds and other pets such as ferrets and rabbits.
Each airline sets their own rules for the number of pets a passenger can bring into the cabin. Most airlines permit only one pet per passenger; other airlines allow multiple pets in the same carrier as long as the pets are of the same species. JetBlue, for example, allows passengers to bring two pets, each in their own carrier, onboard the plane at the same time but requires travelers to pay for a second seat (and pay a second pet fee). Similarly, Alaska Airlines allows passengers to bring up to two pet carriers with them in the cabin if they buy two seats next to each other on the flight.
All airlines limit the number of in-cabin pets permitted on each flight; the number of pets depends on the type of aircraft, destination, and operating airline. Since there is limited space for pets in the aircraft it’s strongly recommended to make a reservation for your pet as soon as possible after booking your flight, preferably no later than 24 hours before the departure of your flight.
Pet carriers
• All airlines require that carriers be big enough for the pet to stand, turn around, and lie down. Pets must be small enough to fit comfortably inside the closed / zipped carrier.
• Non-collapsible kennels can’t exceed the under-seat dimensions of any aircraft included in your journey. Please contact reservations to verify maximum dimensions.
• Soft-sided collapsible kennels are recommended and can be slightly larger but still need to fit under the seat without having to excessively collapse the kennel. They must be secure, padded, made of water-repellant material and have nylon mesh ventilation on 3 or more sides.
Before you board your flight
Many U.S airports offer animal and pet relief areas post-security; most at least offer designated areas outside the terminal. While many pet relief areas are merely small patches of fake grass in hidden corners of terminals, others are pet parks with real grass, faux fire hydrants and space to run and play. For example, Chicago O’Hare International Airport’s Pet Relief Room is complete with artificial grass covering, miniature fire hydrants and pop-up sprinkler systems to wash away liquid waste into a drain; and Detroit International Airport’s restroom for dogs with two patches of fake and real grass, and a sprinkler system to eliminate waste into drains below the grass.
