Amtrak is a passenger railroad service in the U.S. that provides medium- and long-distance intercity service in the contiguous United States. Amtrak serves more than 500 destinations in 46 states and three Canadian provinces. Dogs and cats up to 20 pounds are welcome for trips of up to seven hours on most routes (some restrictions apply). Pets are welcome in Coach Class and Acela Business Class (pets are not allowed in Acela First Class seating, First Class private rooms, non-Acela Business Class, food service cars or other accommodations). Some routes designate a specific Coach car for pets: Amtrak Cascades, Carl Sandburg, Illinois Zephyr, Illini, Lincoln Service, Saluki, Pere Marquette, Wolverine, Blue Water, Hiawatha and Missouri River Runner. On other pet friendly routes, you and your pet may ride in any Coach car. Travel with pets in Canada not available on Adirondack, Maple Leaf and Amtrak Cascades; not available on Auto Train, Keystone Service, Pennsylvanian, San Joaquins, Capitol Corridor Pacific Surfliner or Thruway Connecting Services. Pet owners must provide a pet carrier. Amtrak does not ship pets or allow them to travel as checked baggage — a pet must travel with a human.
Taking a pet to the United States involves preparation and planning far in advance of your departure date. Health certificates may be required for entry into some states; you should check with officials in your state of destination prior to your travel date. Find info on bringing a pet into the U.S.
