Pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed in the Blue Ridge Parkway and on the hiking trails. Operated by the National Park Service and noted for its scenic beauty, the parkway runs for 469 miles through 29 Virginia and North Carolina counties, linking Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It runs mostly along the spine of the Blue Ridge, a major mountain chain that is part of the Appalachian Mountains. The road is open year-round, but sections may close from inclement weather or maintenance.
