Fort Sumter and Fort Moultrie National Historical Park mainly protects Fort Sumter, Fort Moultrie, the Charleston Light and Liberty Square, Charleston. Fort Sumter is best known as the site where the shots that started the American Civil War were fired, at the Battle of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. Pets on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed on the Liberty Square grounds and walking paths, but are not permitted within the Liberty Square Visitor Center building. Pets are not permitted at Fort Sumter due to the high volume of visitors to this secluded island fort. Fort Sumter Tours does not permit pets on board vessels. Pets are not permitted within Fort Moultrie or the Fort Moultrie Visitor Center; however they are permitted along walking paths, trails, and grounds on the exterior of the fort.
