Pets are allowed in some areas of Fire Island National Seashore, but must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet at all times. The park protects a 26-mile section of Fire Island, an approximately 30-mile long barrier island separated from Long Island by the Great South Bay. There are 17 private communities within the boundaries of the national park, including Saltaire, Fire Island Pines, and Ocean Beach. Only two bridges lead to the island and the national seashore and there are no public roads within the seashore itself. Pets are not allowed in buildings; on ocean beaches (Lighthouse, Sailors Haven, Watch Hill, Talisman, and Wilderness) and within the Fire Island Wilderness from March 15 through Labor Day; in picnic areas, or in areas closed for wildlife protection. During the summer when ocean beaches are closed to pets, they are still allowed in some areas: on ferries and water taxis; on park boardwalks; on bayside beaches at the Fire Island Lighthouse, Sailors Haven, Talisman/Barrett Beach, and Watch Hill; on boats in the park’s concession-operated marinas; and in the concession-operated Watch Hill Campground.
