The Freedom Trail is recognized as a National Recreation Trail. The 2.5-mile, red-lined route is a self-guided walking tour that leads to 16 sites and structures of historic importance in downtown Boston and Charlestown. The Trail a physical red line embedded into city sidewalks that assist trail goers to find their way to each historic site. Sites include Faneuil Hall, the Boston Common and the Old North Church. Dogs are allowed on the tour as it is a path on city sidewalks and in public spaces such as Boston Common, Bunker Hill Monument grounds, and Charlestown Navy Yard. Dogs are not permitted in the historic burying grounds or the historic sites’ buildings.
