Fire Island National Seashore Beaches are located on a 26-mile section of Fire Island, a barrier island separated from Long Island by the Great South Bay. The island is part of New York State’s Suffolk County. From March 15 through Labor Day dogs are not permitted on ocean beaches (Lighthouse, Sailors Haven, Watch Hill, Talisman, and Wilderness) and within the Fire Island Wilderness. During the summer when ocean beaches are closed to pets, dogs on a leash not longer than 6 feet are allowed on bayside beaches at the Fire Island Lighthouse, Sailors Haven, Talisman/Barrett Beach, and Watch Hill. Dogs are not permitted in buildings, on ocean beaches from March 15 through Labor Day, in picnic areas, or in areas closed for wildlife protection. Leashed pets are allowed on ferries and water taxis.
