Gateway National Recreation Area NJ is a 26,607-acre area in Monmouth County, NJ and New York City. It provides many recreational opportunities, including ocean swimming, bird watching, boating, hiking and camping. The recreation area comprises one unit in New Jersey: Sandy Hook Unit in northern New Jersey, includes miles of Sandy Hook beaches.
Dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed at the following beaches at Sandy Hook:
Oceanside beaches during the off-season, from September 15th to March 15th. Pets are not allowed on oceanside beaches during the spring and summer because that is when the threatened piping plover builds nests in those locations.
Bayside beaches at Plum Island and Horseshoe Cove (Sandy Hook) throughout the year.
