Located right outside the town center of Provincetown on Province Lands Road near the end of Route 6, Provincetown, Herring Cove Beach is the only Cape Cod National Seashore beach that is on the Cape Cod Bay side of the Cape. Therefore, the waves are more gentle and the water temperatures a bit warmer than along the Atlantic Ocean. Only part of the beach is lifeguard protected. There are two parking areas to the beach: one on the right is closer to the beach; and the one on the left is larger. Amenities: the only snack bar within Cape Cod National Seashore; picnic shelter/pavilion; picnic table; restroom; showers. Dogs on a leash no longer than 6 feet are allowed on the beach to the south (to the left) of the bathhouse complex, approximately one mile to Woods End Light. During the summer, pets are not permitted on lifeguard-protected beaches. However, leashed pets are permitted to pass through lifeguard protected areas to reach areas where they may otherwise be allowed. If there are shorebird closures on or beyond lifeguard-protected beaches, pets are not allowed to walk through. During shorebird nesting, staging, and migrating periods, from April 1 through October 15, pets are not permitted in posted locations. Walking pets in these areas is prohibited 24/7.
