Managed by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), Castle Island is a 22-acre recreation area in South Boston on the shore of Boston Harbor. It anchors Pleasure Bay Beach at the northern tip of a 3-mile stretch of beaches looking out onto Dorchester Bay. The island and connected beaches allow for plenty of shoreline to take a dip into the ocean. The island has a tiny sandy beach on its western edge overlooking the protected calm water of Pleasure Bay. Pleasure Bay Beach is only about a 3-minute walk from Castle Island’s smaller beach. Pleasure Bay, M Street Beach and Carson Beach form three-mile segment of parkland and the beach along the coast south of Boston from Dorchester Bay. Carson Beach offers beautiful views and great public services, and has a gateway that allows one to walk, bike or jog along the water from Castle Island to the Kennedy Library. Dogs on a leash are allowed on the beach during the off-season, from Sept. 16th to May 1st.
